Launched on the Ethereum blockchain in April 2023, it follows the memecoin trend popularised by Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, thriving on entertainment value and speculative trading rather than technological innovation. Its rapid rise on social media and within online communities fueled a surge in popularity and market capitalisation.

Pepe features a deflationary mechanism where a portion of each transaction is “burned”, permanently reducing the supply to increase scarcity. Its massive initial supply of 420.69 trillion tokens contributes to volatility, making the coin prone to significant price swings.
