What is Solana (SOL)?

Solana is a high-performance layer-one protocol built for scalability and high throughput. With a focus on fast speeds and low transaction fees, the network was specifically designed to support high-use applications.

Solana aims to solve the congestion issues currently choking the Ethereum network by providing an alternative computing platform that also offers smart contracts. Like Ethereum, Solana is both a cryptocurrency and a blockchain that allows developers to build decentralised applications (dApps).

It is not necessary to have blockchain experience or knowledge of smart contracts to begin building on Solana. Programs is Solana’s smart contracts development tool. Rust C and C++ are used to write programs on Solana that are deployed on-chain. The protocol also supports other programming languages and is compatible with third-party clients including Solidity (Ethereum) and Substrate (Polkadot).

Solana’s ability to scale combined with its low network fees makes it an attractive choice for many new play-to-earn Web3 apps and crypto games. The Solana ecosystem, however, boasts a diverse and expansive range of products that extends way beyond gaming to include; NFTs, music apps, decentralised finance (DeFi) and even decentralised exchanges (DEXs).

The native token of the Solana blockchain is SOL, which is used as a utility token to pay for transactions on the network. SOL token holders can also stake their SOL and receive rewards. At the time of writing, Solana (SOL) has a circulating supply of 360 million coins and a total supply of approximately 533 million.
