What is Chainlink (LINK)?
Chainlink (LINK) is a decentralised oracle network that was developed to connect smart contract platforms like Ethereum and DeFi with data from the real world. The cryptocurrency that is native to the Chainlink platform is LINK, which is used to pay node operators and data providers that leverage the network.
With Chainlink, purchasers request data they would like to use and providers place bids to be able to provide that data. Providers must then commit a stake of LINK tokens when they want to make a bid, which can then be taken away in the event they misbehave. Once the provider is selected, it is their job to then bring the correct data on chain.
To monitor this, Chainlink uses a decentralised oracle reputation system that aggregates and weighs the data provided. In the event the data is provided correctly, providers get paid and purchasers get the data they are looking for in a secure and decentralised fashion.
